4 Hacks You Can Use for Blocked Drains

There’s nothing more irritating as seeing and smelling a blocked toilet or sink. The sight and smell of dirty waste water can make anyone vomit and feel light-headed. For some sensitive people, it can trigger asthma or even allergic attacks.

The presence of blocked drains is a nightmare for many people; not many can stomach the despicable odour and image of slimy and filthy waste water. For these types of people, they can unclog the drainage using tried and tested hacks. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  • Use drain snake – You can find this cleaning tool in many groceries. It is a long flexible metal rope with a hook or spiral at the end that is used to unblock drains. Just push it on the sink or drain and remove the accumulated food debris and other objects that block the pipes.
  • Caustic soda – This chemical is also known as Sodium Hydroxide. It is a cleaning material that can be bought at most home improvement stores. Just make sure to wear rubber gloves and goggles in handling this liquid as it can cause severe damage to the skin. Mix 3 cups of this in a 3/4 gallon of water in a bucket. This will cause a reaction that makes it fizz. Then pour the mixture down the drain and leave it for 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, flush it with boiling water.
  • Dish detergent – Pour 1/4 cup of dish detergent in the bowl. Let it sit for a few minutes and pour a kettleful of boiling water down the drain. Then, use a plunger.
  • Salt and baking soda – Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of table salt and pour them into the blocked drain. After 10-20 minutes, pour boiling water. The combination of these three materials will create a chemical reaction that can dissolve some of the most stubborn blockages.
